Highland Cattle in Denmark

The first Highland Cattle were imported to Denmark in 1956 and since then the numbers has increased. According to the statistics from The Danish Agricultural Advisory Center - Highland Cattle is 6 in numbers out of 17 Beef Breeds in the country with 4869 purebred Highlanders. There are 737 farms where pure breed of Highland Cattle are registered and there are 1943 pure bred Highland cows. More information can be found at www.lr.dk.
THE DANISH HIGHLAND CATTLE SOCIETY
The Danish Highland Cattle Society was established in 1987 and has around 200 members. The society is a member of The Danish Board of Beef Breeds.
CLASSIFICATION
In Denmark the Linear Scoring System has been utilized for beef cattle since 1994. The score/description is objective. There are 19 traits, which are combined using a computer program putting the figures into: BODY - MUSCULARITY - FEET & LEGS, which again is combined into an overall type trait called TYPE. Read more
PERFORMANCE TEST
Since 1999 Highland Cattle bulls have participated in the performance test at Aalestrup Test Station, every year a new group has been there. Read more
HERDBOOK
The first Danish Cattle Herdbook was published in 1881. Generally speaking the Herdbook follow the rules designed by EU. Bulls are only registered in the Herdbook if their parentage has been confirmed by a blood/DNA test. Progeny by non-registered bulls have unknown paternal ancestry!
EXPORT
Danish cattle are known for its high health record, which is one of the reasons why Danish Highland Cattle has been exported to many countries. There has been exported Highlanders to Austria, Germany, Faeroe Island, Finland, France, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. Read more

Over the years Denmark has established a close relationship to Scotland to make sure that our Highlanders maintain the original look. Almost every year we have a Scottish judge on at least one of the Danish shows.
